The summer vacation season is upon us, and it is a great time to get out and have fun. The sunny weather gives us the opportunity to be active. One of the reasons to stay in shape throughout the year is so you can enjoy all the outdoor fun you can handle when the warm weather arrives.

Summer also provides another opportunity. You can take advantage of the great weather to incorporate outdoor activities in your exercise routine (even if our clients swear exercising inside in a ring is a better, more fun workout). Here are some activities that you can enjoy while also getting in a great workout.

Swimming

One of the best parts of summer is getting into the water. The combination of the hot sun and the refreshing water just feels like summer. Plus, swimming is one of the best ways to exercise. You can work your entire body. Whether you are swimming laps in the pool, playing a game of water polo with friends, or diving into the waves at the beach, the water is one of the best outdoor gyms you can find.

If you want to really get in a workout, make sure you plan a routine before you start. Think about things like numbers of laps, types of strokes, and how long you want to work. You can play in the water before or after your workout to make the most of the experience.

Hiking

When the summer heat gets intense, heading for the mountains is a nice way to cool off. Hiking is also a great way to exercise in summer. One of the real advantages of hiking as a form of outdoor workout is that you can choose trails based on how hard you want to work. You might want to go for a brisk walk over level terrain, or you can find a peak to aim for and get a great leg and cardio workout on your way up to a magnificent view.

Biking

Another way to enjoy the trails is to explore on your bike. Biking helps you get great exercise while covering a lot of ground. You can mountain bike on trails, or road bike for distance. It’s a wonderful way to explore the back roads or the backcountry outside of the city.

Canoeing

Worried about not working your upper body enough during your outdoor exercising? Once again, water is the place to go. Rowing a canoe or kayak will give your arms, back, shoulders, and core a terrific workout. Once you get on the water, you can decide how long and fast you want to row. Plus, getting out in the middle of a lake is a wonderful summer treat. You can add other hobbies like fishing into the trip for a great overall experience.

Running

When the winter weather has you boxed in, you often have to rely on a treadmill to get in your running. But when the warm weather kicks in, running outside is the way to go. In addition to being great exercise, running helps you clear your head and explore your surroundings. When the summer heat gets intense, go running in the early morning or late evening. Just make sure your wear bright visible clothing if it is going to get dark during your run.

Boxing

Boxing is one of the best workouts you can do. It offers intense cardio, adds strength and coordination, and helps build confidence. You can shadow box outside in the summer weather, and you can practice some of the drills you learn at a Legends Boxing class just about anywhere. And when you get back to class, all that exercise you did in the water and on the trails will really make a difference.
